About Me & Why I Write Running Devotions

When we were little, my parents would take my siblings and me to the track to burn off some extra energy. “See how many laps you can run without stopping,” they said. “It’ll be fun,” they said. And for me, it was.

Fast forward over 40 years, and I’m still running—though that makes it sound more consistent than it really was. After high school, I took an 18-year break from running while navigating marriage, building a career, and raising children. But during those years, something even more life-changing happened—I committed my life to Christ. Marriage and parenthood brought incredible joy, but studying the Bible gave everything a deeper meaning, running included.

When I finally laced up my shoes again, those first few weeks were brutal—painful, nauseating, and humbling. But once I pushed through, running became more enjoyable than ever. Being outside, experiencing the beauty of every season God created, was a gift. Even learning how to endure the elements—rain, wind, and snow—felt exhilarating. And best of all, running gave me something I had been missing: quiet time alone to pray, something hard to come by with two young children at home.

Setting a Goal

Anyone who runs knows it’s not always easy. Injuries can be downright discouraging. A big reason I didn’t give up was that I set a goal: to complete a marathon. Along the way, there were plenty of challenges. Many training runs began with a prayer—just asking God to help me finish without limping home.

In the midst of those struggles, I thought about starting a blog to document my journey, but I hesitated. What if things didn’t go well? What if my setbacks discouraged others instead of inspiring them?

Now, 15 years later, I’m grateful to say that by God’s grace, I’ve not only completed multiple marathons but have also qualified for and run the Boston Marathon three times. From black toenails, knee pain, and gut issues to reaching new personal bests, I’ve learned so much about endurance—both in running and in faith.

That’s why I’m excited to share what I’ve discovered in a devotional form. If you love the Bible, racing, and maybe even some sporty parenting tips, stick around! Let’s learn and grow together.

Happy Running!
Marie
