About Me & Why I Write Running Devotions
When we were little, my parents would take my siblings and me to the track to burn off some of our extra energy. “Find out how many laps you can run without stopping,” they said. “It will be fun,” they said — and for me, it was. It’s been over 30 years and I’m still running. Well, that sounds a bit more consistent than it really was. I am still running but there was an 18 year break between high school and my late thirties.
During those 18 years, amid marriage, starting a career, and having children, I made a commitment to follow Christ. Marriage and children are great changes but studying the Bible shed an even greater meaning and depth over everything in life. Running included!
When I picked up running again, after the pain and nausea of the first few weeks, it became more enjoyable than it had ever been before. Being outside again to experience the all the seasons God created, was wonderful. Even finding ways to stay relatively comfortable in the rain, wind, and snow were exhilarating. Also, running provided a time alone to pray — something that wasn’t happening very often with two young children at home.
Setting a Goal
Everyone knows that running can be difficult and the injuries downright discouraging. A big reason I didn’t give up is because I set a goal to complete a marathon. Along the way, there have been quite a few challenges and frustrations. Many training runs would begin with a prayer that I could finish without having to limp home. In the middle of some of these challenges, I wondered if I should start a blog to document the progress but feared it would be more of a discouragement to others if things didn’t turn out well.
It’s been over 7 years since then and I’m grateful to say I’ve finished 4 marathons, numerous shorter races and quite a few triathlons as well. What’s more is that I’ve been able to incorporate my kid’s triathlon training into my training and we all get to burn off that extra energy together.
From black toenails, knee pain, and gut issues to attaining healthy goals, I am excited to share what I’ve discovered about running and faith in a devotional form. If you love the Bible, racing, and maybe even some sporty parenting tips, stick around and we can learn more together.
